Maryna Podlyuk: Follow the rules of netiquette

Maryna Podlyuk

What is Netiquette? It's network etiquette -- that is, the etiquette of cyberspace. In other words, netiquette is a set of rules for behaving properly online.

The list of core rules below are offered as a set of general guidelines for cyberspace behavior.

Rule 1: Remember the human

Do unto others as you'd have others do unto you. Stand up for yourself, but try not to hurt people's feelings.

Rule 2: Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life

- Be ethical

- Breaking the law is bad Netiquette

Rule 3: Know where you are in cyberspace

· Netiquette varies from domain to domain

· Lurk before you leap

Rule 4: Respect other people's time and bandwidth

· You are not the center of cyberspace

· Keep the rules for discussion groups

Rule 5: Make yourself look good online

· Take advantage of your anonymity

· Know what you're talking about and make sense

· Don't post flame-bait

Rule 6: Share expert knowledge

Rule 8: Respect other people's privacy

Rule 9: Don't abuse your power

Rule 10: Be forgiving of other people's mistakes

Dear Marina,

Thank you for your good topic raised here.
What are in your opinion the most importaant rules of Netiquette? Have you ever been a participant of e-groups or e-discussion lists? What is the most impressive experience of yours?

Dear Marina! It is great that you understand the importance of nettiquette. In today's multicultural and global business environment, knowing a lot about your area of expertise isn't enough. The ability to get along with others, demonstrate good manners, and make others feel comfortable is becoming increasingly important to career success. Without these skills, you not only risk losing customers but the support of colleagues and associates.

Dear Nagora!
Unfortunately, it's my first work in such measure. So, I don't have any experience in this post. As for me, the most important rules of netiquette are: remember the human, know where you are in cyberspace, make yourself look good online.
Thank you for your questions!

Dear Marina,
You are right! Remember the human is the most important rule. It's just like real life, isn't it? Great topic!

Hello, Maryna!
The "human touch" is definitely the most important for me. We must always remember that it's human beings who are the other end, so we must treat them with respect. The "high tech", or the tools, are just our go-betweens.
There's also another rule which I think is very important to remember. "Don't say online or in an email what you wouldn't say in a postcard."
Keep up the great work!
